To eliminate nitrogen purge or suppress its quantity of use to a minimum while suppressing degradation of fuel cell performance accompanying its start.
The fuel cell system is constructed of a fuel cell main body 1 having a fuel gas passage in which fuel gas flows and an oxidizer gas passage in which oxidizer gas flows, a fuel gas supply means 4 for supplying the fuel gas to the fuel cell main body 1, an oxidizer gas supply means for supplying the oxidizer gas to the fuel cell main body 1, a hydrogen detector 6 for detecting the fuel gas supplied to the fuel cell main body 1 from the fuel gas supply means 4, a hydrogen transit time shortening-gas supply means 5 which supplies a hydrogen transit time shortening-gas to a fuel gas system connecting the fuel gas supply means 4 and the fuel cell main body 1 based on information of this hydrogen detector 6.
