To provide a rotary hearth furnace and a method of operating it for complete combustion of combustible components remaining in exhaust gas generated in a rotary hearth furnace without posing any problem on, for example, production of reduced iron so as to attain effective utilization in heating/reduction and improve fuel consumption property.
The rotary hearth furnace 1 is equipped with an exhaust gas discharge unit 8. The exhaust gas discharge unit 8 includes a cell forming part 12a and a ventilation duct 13. The cell forming part 12a is provided in a part of an exhaust gas discharge region of ceiling part of the rotary hearth furnace, and the ventilation duct 13 is connected to the cell forming part. The lower face of the cell forming part 12a is higher than those of other ceiling parts, and a cell 9 is formed in the cell forming part to retain exhaust gas. Preferably, a cooling medium blowing nozzle 16 is provided for the ventilation duct 13.
