To provide an imaging apparatus appropriately fixing exposure, and an exposure control method for the imaging apparatus.
The imaging apparatus is equipped with: a first detection means to detect the luminance of a first area corresponding to a photographic range; an automatic exposure control means to control an exposure value based on the luminance detected by the first detection means; a second detection means for detecting the change of the scene of a second area including the first area and wider than the first area; a surrounding scene variation detection means to detect surrounding scene variation that is scene variation at least in a partial area in a photographic periphery range surrounding the first area in the second area based on a result detected by the second detection means; and an exposure fixing control means to perform exposure fixing control to fix the exposure value controlled by the automatic exposure control means for a fixed time when determined that the surrounding scene variation is equal to or above a periphery threshold.
