Abstract:

To provide a method of holding a catalyst on a fibrous carbon which prevents the carbon from coagulating in a chain shape, capable of making the catalyst fine particles held without coagulation, and to provide a fuel cell electrode and a fuel cell capable of making the catalyst, a conductive body (carbon), and an electrolyte closely contact to one another by applying the catalyst holding fibrous carbon to the fuel cell electrode or the fuel cell.

Prior to a catalyst-holding process of making the fibrous carbon (carbon nanotube) as a carbonaceous material hold a catalyst, a reactive site is introduced on the surface of the fibrous carbon by using an oxidant. (Concretely, the reactive site is introduced on the outer surface of the carbon nanotube by treating the carbon nanotube with a nitric acid, or a nitric acid and a sulfuric acid.) The catalyst holding fibrous carbon obtained by the method of holding the catalyst is applied to the fuel cell electrode or the fuel cell.
