In this separator for a sealed lead-acid battery formed of a tiny glass fiber mat having an average fiber diameter not larger than 1.5 μm, a porous coating of lead powder-impermeable and electrolyte ion-permeable silica particles is formed on one surface of the tiny glass fiber mat, and the short circuiting time thereof is not smaller than 150% (standard sample comparison).
