Abstract:
Two stage oxidation process for the production of aromatic dicarboxylic acids comprising (1) oxydizing paraxylene at a temperature of 150 to 180°C and about 50 to 189 psia in the presence of an oxygen containing gas, an oxidation catalyst and aqueous acetic acid solvent in a first pressurized oxidation reactor to produce a benzenedicarboxylic acid product; (2) removing the benzenedicarboxylic acid product from the first pressurized oxidation reactor and feeding said product of step (1) to a second oxidation reactor; (3) further liquid phase oxidizing in said second oxidation reactor said benezenedicarboxyclic acid product while feeding to said second oxidation reactor a vapour phase solvent comprising partially dewatered acetic acid.
