To provide a precursor polymer providing an isoindole polymer and having high solubility in an organic solvent.
The isoindole polymer is obtained by electrochemically polymerizing a specific bicyclo-substituted pyrrol (exemplified by 4,7-dihydro-4,7-ethane-2H-indole and N-alkyl substituted derivative) in the presence of an organic solvent such as the nitrile-based and ether-based solvents, and an electrolyte, or by subjecting the compound to oxidative polymerization in the presence of a chlorine-based solvent or an aprotic solvent and oxidants such as inorganic oxidants and organic metal salts. The polymer has high solubility in the organic solvent, excellent operability in coating, film formation or the like, and excellent electroconductivity.
