To output a stable synthetic image by suppressing the frequent occurrence of unnatural luminance change with dynamic range enlargement during a synthetic imaging mode.
An imaging apparatus consecutively produces a synthetic image signal obtained by synthesizing a long-time exposure image signal of a relatively long exposure time and a short-time exposure image signal of a relatively short exposure time. The imaging apparatus includes: a luminance detection unit for detecting a luminance value of an image obtained from the synthetic image signal; and a control unit for controlling the exposure of the synthetic image signal on the basis of the luminance value detected by the luminance detection unit. The control unit controls the exposure just once so that the synthetic image signal may become a prescribed exposure, and subsequently controls to fix the exposure of the synthetic image signal to the prescribed exposure.
