To provide an imaging apparatus for reducing photographs where capturing of images fails for out of focus in proximity photographing by notifying a user of the fact that a distance between the imaging apparatus and a subject is shorter than the shortest photographing distance.
The imaging apparatus includes an imaging section for capturing an image of the subject to output an image signal, an auxiliary light source emitting fill light, a difference calculation section for obtaining a difference of a gradient for each pixel between a first image signal of the subject irradiated with the fill light and a second image signal of the subject not irradiated with the fill light, a distribution formation section for obtaining a reflection distribution by determining the presence or absence of reflection of fill light of a pixel block, where an image is divided by a prescribed number of pixels based on the difference, a comparison distribution storage section for storing the reflection distribution for each distance as a comparison distribution in advance, a distance estimation section for comparing the reflection distribution with the comparison distribution to obtain distance to the subject, a photographing propriety determination section for determining whether the distance is less than the shortest photographable distance of a photographing optical system, and a photographing propriety notification section for notifying a photographer of the fact that photographing is not possible when a result determined by the photographing propriety determination section is less than the shortest photographable distance.
