To maintain a good inertia supercharging effect and exhaust characteristics by suitably controlling the air-fuel ratio of an air-fuel mixture supplied to an internal combustion engine which is equipped with a valve mechanism for changing the operation phase of an intake valve and performs inertia supercharging.
An inertia supercharging correction factor KPACHGX is calculated (S13, S14) according to an atmospheric pressure PA, a gauge pressure PBGA, and an intake valve operation phase CAIN when the gauge pressure PBGA is a predetermined gauge pressure PACHG or more. The inertia supercharging correction factor KPACHGX is set to a larger value than 1.0 within a range of the rotation number for a predetermined period of time in the operation state in which the throttle valve is almost fully opened, whereby the fuel is supplied corresponding to an amount of intake air that is increased by inertia supercharging.
