To provide an organic EL element capable of simplifying a manufacturing process.
The organic EL element 1 includes: a substrate 2; a transparent electrode 3 formed on the substrate 2; an organic light-emitting layer 4 formed on the transparent electrode 3, an upper negative electrode 5 formed on the organic light-emitting layer 4; a pair of bank members 6a and 6b arranged on the transparent electrode 3 between the periphery of the transparent electrode 3 and the periphery of the organic light-emitting layer 4 so as to hold the organic light-emitting layer 4 between them; and a flattening film 7 made of a resin and formed between the pair of bank members 6a and 6b to cover the organic light-emitting layer 4.
