To provide an imaging apparatus that speedily performs focusing on an optional subject in a field.

An image captured in the display position that is a position of a focus lens 13 upon starting range-finding is acquired as the image for display, to be displayed on an image display unit 28. Then, a face of the subject included in the captured image is detected, and a position of the focus lens 13 assumed to be the position focusing on the subject is calculated on the basis of the size of the detected face. Subsequently, the focus lens 13 is moved to a position within a range that is set on the basis of the calculated position of the focus lens 13, and an evaluation value is acquired at the position. The acquisition of the image for display at the position for display and the acquisition of the evaluation value at the evaluation value acquisition position are repeated, and a necessary number of evaluation values are acquired. Then, the position of the focus lens 13 for focusing on the subject is calculated on the basis of the necessary number of evaluation values acquired.
