To provide a separator capable of constituting a battery with excellent safety at abnormal heating, by restraining fall of energy density as much as possible and securing reliability of the battery, as well as a lithium secondary battery with the above separator.
Of the porous separator for a battery at least containing inorganic fine particles with an insulating property and a binder, the inorganic fine particles are provided with a functional group with a mol cohesion energy smaller than 30 kJ/mol on the surface. The lithium secondary battery is provided with the above separator. As the functional group, an amino group, epoxy group, acrylic group, methacrylic group, alkyl group, ureide group, mercapto group, or an isocyanate group is preferable.
