A vehicle stopping cause that makes the driver stop the vehicle is identified based on a situation in front of the vehicle. In the case that a timing in which the vehicle stopping cause is eliminated does not depend on the driving operation of the driver of the vehicle, a first deceleration control to stop the vehicle in a predetermined braking period is selected as the deceleration control to be executed. In the case that the timing in which the vehicle stopping cause is eliminated depends on the driving operation of the driver of the vehicle, a second deceleration control having a shorter braking period than the first deceleration control is selected as the deceleration control to be executed. The selected deceleration control is executed to stop the vehicle at a stop position in response to the vehicle stopping cause.
