To provide an imaging apparatus and method, in which long time exposure is attained by generating a vertical synchronizing signal in a period longer than a generation period of the vertical synchronizing signal in a normal exposure mode and in a long time exposure mode also in the imaging apparatus of configuration for performing setting of an exposure period in one vertical period (a period for one period of the vertical synchronizing signal) in any of the normal exposure mode and the long time exposure mode.

In the long time exposure mode, output of the vertical synchronizing signal to a timing generator TG is stopped by making a horizontal/vertical synchronizing signal generation section 37 shift into a standby state after the start of exposure or simultaneously as the start of exposure of a CMOS sensor 21, count of time is started by a timer 37a, and after the timer 37a counts predetermined time, the output of the vertical synchronizing signal to the timing generator TG is restarted by making the horizontal/vertical synchronizing signal generation section 37 shift into an operating state.
