To provide a substrate for an organic EL element capable of surely dividing a cathode by a barrier wall in the case of film-forming an organic layer by a printing method.

The substrate for the organic EL element has: a substrate; a first electrode layer formed on the substrate; and a plurality of insulating barrier walls which are formed on the substrate wherein the first electrode layer is formed and which demarcate a dividing region to divide a second electrode layer into a plurality of numbers. Respective barrier walls are constituted of a plurality of small barrier walls installed in parallel by having a prescribed spacing, and the spacing between the small barrier walls is within a range of 1-80 μm.
