To take a more excellent image when a subject exists out of a light control range of a flash during flash photography.
The imaging apparatus (100) capable of imaging using a flash 111 includes: exposure control means (106 and 117) obtaining an exposure condition including exposure time based on luminance information of image data obtained by imaging by an imaging means; a subject detection part (115) detecting the subject from the obtained image data; a distance detection part (116) obtaining a distance to the detected subject; a light emission determination part (117) determining to perform imaging using the flash when the distance to the subject is within the light control range of the flash, and perform imaging without using the flash in other cases; and an EF processing part (110) obtaining an emitted light quantity by which the flash is made to emit light based on the luminance information when the light emission determination part determines to perform photography using the flash.
