Abstract:
PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an optical fiber in which the transmission loss of the optical fiber can be suppressed to a low level by increasing the concentration of chlorine contained in an optical clad part, and to provide a method for producing a glass preform for the optical fiber.SOLUTION: The optical fiber 1 includes a core 2 and a clad 5. The core 2 is made of quartz glass which does not contain germanium. The clad 5 has an optical clad part 3 located in the outer periphery of the core 2 and a jacket part 4 located in the outer periphery of the optical clad part 3. The optical clad part 3 contains fluorine in an amount of 0.45 mass% or more and 1.50 mass% or less and chlorine in an average concentration of 270 ppm or more and 2,000 ppm or less.
