PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method of operating an auxiliary chamber type gas engine capable of preventing misfire from occurring by controlling the combustion concentration in an auxiliary chamber while maintaining a sufficient engine power output by increasing the combustion concentration in a main chamber at the application of load, and to provide the auxiliary chamber type gas engine.SOLUTION: A method of operating an auxiliary chamber type gas engine includes an auxiliary chamber type engine 1 including a combustion chamber 4 which has a main chamber 6 facing a piston 5 and an auxiliary chamber 8 communicating with the main chamber 6 via an injection hole 7; a load application detection means 3 that detects that a load is applied to an engine output shaft; and an air excess ratio change means 30 for, when the load application is detected, changing an air excess ratio λ in an air-fuel mixture I of air and fuel G supplied to the main chamber 6 to a decreasing side. The method includes evaluating an amount of decrease in the fuel gas G1 to be supplied to the auxiliary chamber 8, where the amount of decrease makes a misfire rate which is the rate of occurrence of misfire in the combustion chamber 4 become lower than a prescribed target misfire rate; and changing and setting an amount of supply of the fuel gas G1 to a lower side by the evaluated amount of decrease in the fuel gas G1.
