Abstract:
PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an optical directional coupler having no polarization dependency.SOLUTION: Two optical waveguides 1, 2 each having a cross section of 90-degree rotational symmetry are arranged at a predetermined interval such that cross sections have 45-degree mirror symmetry. An interval between facing vertices of the cross sections of the two optical waveguides 1, 2 can have a predetermined length d. The two optical waveguides can have identical cross sections (for example, a square having one side a) and a length L. The two optical waveguides 1, 2 consist of a first optical waveguide and a second optical waveguide provided on a substrate, and the second optical waveguide can be positioned 45 degrees obliquely above the first waveguide. Further, the first optical waveguide is in a first clad layer, having a first refractive index, on the substrate, and the second optical waveguide is in a second clad layer, having the first refractive index, on the first clad layer, the first optical waveguide and second optical waveguide each being able to have a refractive index larger than the first refractive index.SELECTED DRAWING: Figure 1
