Abstract:
PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide prophylactic or therapeutic means against atrophic type age-related macular degeneration for which there is no effective treatment.SOLUTION: According to the present invention, there is provided a prophylactic or therapeutic agent for atrophic type age-related macular degeneration, the agent comprising as an active ingredient Aflibercept, which is a recombinant fusion glycoprotein in which the parts of extracellular domains of human VEGF receptor 1 and receptor 2 are linked to the Fc domain of human IgG1. Aflibercept inhibits the activation of a VEGF signal by binding to VEGF-A, VEGF-B, and PlGF with high affinity. In other words, Aflibercept trapped not only PIG but also VEGF (that induces angiogenesis and exacerbates exudative age-related macular degeneration, while having a neuroprotective aspect), and exerts its effect thereon. Therefore, if Aflibercept is applied to atrophic type age-related macular degeneration, as a result of the inhibition of the action of VEGF, it is not possible to obtain the retinoprotective effect, such as one observed when the anti-PlGF antibody is applied.SELECTED DRAWING: None
