PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide: a method for producing 2-furaldehyde from a sugar raw material containing hexose as a constituent component; and a composition for producing 2-furaldehyde.SOLUTION: There is provided a method for producing 2-furaldehyde by mixing and reacting a sugar raw material containing hexose as a constituent component, a catalyst and a solvent, wherein the catalyst is a boron compound and further (1) one or more acids selected from the group consisting of an inorganic acid (provided that boric acid is excluded) and an organic acid and/or (2) a metal compound are mixed and reacted.SELECTED DRAWING: None
