Abstract:
PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To achieve a method of producing a high purity rare saccharide from an inexpensive saccharide and to provide a safe and inexpensive production method of the rare saccharide suitable for use in food products and cosmetics.SOLUTION: The production of a monosaccharide comprising a rare saccharide from a sugar alcohol by the strong oxidation characteristic of photocatalytic reactions using a photoresponsive catalyst as represented by the safe and low cost titanium oxide. By using a sugar alcohol as the raw material the reaction efficiency and selectivity of the photocatalytic reaction is improved, and by using metal supported titanium oxide as the photocatalyst the reaction efficiency of the photocatalytic reaction is improved. The reaction products obtained by the method can be used as a rare saccharide mixture. Furthermore, a high purity rare saccharide can be obtained by purifying with commonly used industrial purification methods.SELECTED DRAWING: Figure 3
