Abstract:
Provided is a flat-plate-shaped reference electrode that has a simple structure, and has excellent stability over time and stability with respect to changes in chloride ion concentration in terms of electrode potential. Disclosed is a flat-plate-shaped reference electrode comprising (i) an electrode layer including a mixture of Ag and an AgX salt and (ii) a water-resistant insulating layer which are layered in this order on an insulating support substrate, the flat-plate-shaped reference electrode being characterized in that: the X- ion is selected from the group consisting of Cl-, Br-, I-, and SCN-; at least a portion of the electrode layer includes a porous electrode region or a porous precursor electrode region; an opening is provided for making the porous electrode region or the porous precursor electrode region fluidically communicable with an exterior of the electrode; and an alkali metal salt or an alkali-earth metal salt (a MAX salt or a MEX2 salt, wherein the MA + ion is an alkali metal ion and the ME 2+ ion is an alkali-earth metal ion) is included in the voids of the electrode layer including the porous electrode region, or the porous precursor electrode region is a mixture layer of Ag, the AgX salt, and said metal salt. Also disclosed is a method for producing said flat-plate-shaped reference electrode.
