Abstract:
Provided are a liquid crystal composition where the action of a polymer makes it possible to achieve homeotropic alignment of liquid crystal molecules, and a liquid crystal display element containing this composition. The present invention is a nematic liquid crystal composition that contains, as a first additive, a compound having polymerizable groups and polar groups in a branching structure of a molecular end, and that has negative dielectric constant anisotropy. This composition may additionally contain: as a first component, a specific liquid crystalline compound having considerable negative dielectric constant anisotropy; as a second component, a specific liquid crystalline compound having a high upper limit temperature or low viscosity; and a polymerizable compound as a second additive. The present invention is also a liquid crystal display element containing this composition.
