A release plate (3) is fixed on the ski (1) to be capable of being swung out laterally by means of a cylindrical pivot pin (2). On the rear part (3a) of the release plate (3), held by the pivot pin (2), an automatic heel mechanism (5) of known construction is secured. A front plate part (3b) is mounted in this rear plate part (3a) to be capable of lengthwise displacement in the longitudinal direction of the release plate (3). At its front end, the front plate part (3b) carries a front jaw (14). Coupled to the latter is a lateral release mechanism (16) of known construction. The front jaw (14) has a control surface (29) with which the front jaw (14), in its position of motion, rests against a contact roller (28). In the event of a sideways release, this control surface (29) moves out of contact with the contact roller (28), which permits a displacement of the front jaw (14) towards the tip of the ski and away from the automatic heel mechanism (5). In this manner, the ski boot is released. After the release of the ski boot, the lateral release mechanism (16) twists the release plate (3) back into the position of motion. During this backward pivoting movement, the front jaw (14), which contacts the contact roller (28) with one lateral section (29a) of the control cam (29), is forced back towards the automatic heel mechanism (5). Complete and automatic return of the release plate (3) and of the front jaw (14) into the position of motion is thus possible.
