Abstract:
A fuel-injected compression-ignition internal combustion engine for vehicles, in particular motor vehicles with a heat-resistant filter arranged in the exhaust pipe of the internal combustion engine for separating particulates, in particular, from the exhaust gas has a periodically operable device for setting an operating mode of the internal combustion engine in which the particles collected in the filter are burnt. In order to obtain a regeneration device of this kind with as little as possible outlay, the filter (2) should be provided with a catalytically acting coating on the surface exposed to the exhaust gas and the device should comprise an exhaust-gas recirculation device (5-7) which returns at least part of the exhaust gas of the internal combustion engine (1) to the intake pipe (4) and, during its time of operation, can be switched backwards and forwards at short time intervals between a position in which it recirculates the exhaust gas and a position in which it does not recirculate the exhaust gas.
