Abstract:
A squeeze film damper (100) for a dynamically unbalanced rotor includes a bearing (59) on the rotor having a non-rotatable outer race (74) which is vibrateable as a unit with the rotor, an outer plain cylindrical surface (80) on the bearing outer race (74), an inner plain cylindrical surface (102) on a support (82) around the outer surface (80) concentric therewith when rotor is aligned on a nominal axis of the support (82) and co-operable therewith in defining a small annulus (104) having a radial depth corresponding to the maximum radial vibratory displacement of the rotor, an annular groove (106) in the inner cylindrical surface (102) of axial length of between 1/2 and 2/3 of the axial length of the small annulus (104) and co-operable with the outer plain surface (80) in defining a large annulus (116) having a radial depth of at least three times the small annulus radial depth, the groove (106) being axially symmetrical with respect to the small annulus (104), and means (95, 96, 118) for maintaining the small and large annuli filled with fluid under pressure.
