Abstract:
A camshaft has a plurality of cams (2a, 2b) disposed spaced apart along a shaft so that the cams may be made of ceramic material with the ceramic cam portions securely joined to the metal of the shaft, the shaft has at least one ceramic cam portion (2) which is made of a ceramic material and includes at least one of the cams. Each ceramic cam portion has a pair of joining protrusions (2d) which extend from opposite ends thereof in the axial direction of the shaft. Metallic shaft portions (1, 3, 4) having joining recesses or holes (1a, 3a, 4a) engage the joining protrusions (2d) of the ceramic cam portion(s) such that the ceramic cam portion(s) is or are joined to the metallic shaft portions.
