Document Type and Number:
Japanese Patent JPH033917
Kind Code:
B2
Abstract:
A composite canning material for nuclear fuel elements comprises a can, e.g. of conventional zirconium alloy, with a metallurgically bonded inner lining of dilute zirconium niobium alloy, pref. a Zr/0.1-0.5 (esp. 0.2-0.4)% Nb alloy, the lining comprising 1-20 (pref. 5-15)% of the total canning material thickness. - The lining protects the can against stress corrosion cracking, embrittlement by liquid metal and contact with fission products, corrosive gases, etc., without appreciably affecting the neutron capture cross-section and heat transfer and without causing any fuel/lining incompatibility problems. The dilute zirconium alloy lining provides improved resistance to oxidn. by hot water or steam compared with a non-alloyed zirconium lining if can rupture occurs. (0/2)
