Abstract:
PURPOSE:To produce the titled polymer having excellent dispersibility and improved hue, by sulfonating a specified norbornene derivative and polymerizing the sulfonated derivative in the presence of an acidic compound catalyst. CONSTITUTION:1mol of a 9-12C norbornene derivative having two double bonds in the molecule and represented by formula I or II (wherein R1-2 are each H or a 1-4C alkyl, R3-4 and R6-9 are each H or a 1-3C alkyl, R5 is a 1-3C alkylene and theta is 0 or 1), except for dicyclopentane and dicyclopentadiene derivatives, is reacted with 0.1-2.0mol of a sulfonating agent (e.g., NaHSO3) at 50- 200 deg.C and a pH of 2-9 in a solvent (e.g., methyl alcohol/water mixture) to sulfonate the double bonds in the norbornene ring. The obtained sulfonated derivative is polymerized at -20-300 deg.C for several - several tens of hr in the presence of an acidic compound catalyst (e.g., sulfuric acid) to obtain a polymer of a weight-average MW>=500.
