A method of synthesizing compounds of the general structural formula Where R is hydrogen, hydroxyl or 1-10 carbon alkyl and n is 0 or 1, and the pharmaceutically acceptable salts thereof. These compounds are macrolides, useful as antibiotics, and also useful as intermediates to the synthesis of other macrolide antibotics.
