Abstract:
A method and apparatus for protecting thyristors, particularly those in a power converter, from overvoltages. Voltage detectors determine if the forward voltage of the thyristors has increased above a predetermined level. If such an overvoltage occurs during a predetermined period after the conduction of the thyristor, forced triggering of the thyristor prevents damage to the thyristor. If more than one thyristor is employed, all the thyristors are forced triggered.
