Abstract:
An automatic inspection apparatus (11, 211) for classifying an article (31, 231) according to a surface characteristic of the article (31, 231) comprises conveying means (30, 230) for conveying the article (31, 231) to an image sensing position and a video camera (14, 214) for capturing an electronic image of a surface of the article (31, 231) as it passes through the image sensing position. Illumination means (38, 39, 227, 228) are provided for illuminating the surface of the article (31, 231) as it passes through the image sensing position. Processing means comprising a microcontroller (17, 217), an image processing unit (18, 218) and a microcomputer (21, 221) are also provided and are configured to process the captured electrical image in order to classify the article (31, 231).
