Abstract:
In the manufacture of sheet glass by spreading the molten glass on a bath of molten metal, the glass is caused to cover substantially the whole surface of the metal and so protect it from oxidation. The edges of the glass ribbon are coded to prevent them from adhering to the side walls of the tank. Metal containers through which a cold fluid is traversed are mounted on or embedded in the walls of the tank at the level of the glass ribbon. To ensure the progressive cooling of the glass ribbon, heating and cooling elements capable of acting on the molten metal and other elements in the space above the ribbon may be provided. In order to separate the solidification zone from the preceding zone, there may be provided a baffle in the space above the ribbon and a barrier in the floor of the tank of a height slightly less than the depth of the molten metal.
