Pivalolactone is prepared by heating the anhydride of a #-acyloxypivalic acid of the formula either alone or in admixture with an aliphatic carboxylic acid or ester of the formula wherein R 1 and R 2 are hydrogen atoms or (C 1 -C 5 ) alkyl groups, at a temperature of from 150‹ to 350‹ C. in the presence of a supported catalyst, e.g. amorphous or crystalline aluminium silicate such as a molecular sieve of uniform pore size.
