1352655 Centrifugal pumps SUNDSTRAND CORP 4 Aug 1972 [4 Aug 1971] 36415/72 Heading F1C [Also in Divisions B1-2] A centrifugal pump comprises an impeller for forcing the fluid outwardly and peripherally around an outer chamber, means for deflecting the fluid inwardly from the outer chamber through a non-rotary filter screen having a smooth external surface into an inner chamber, an exit orifice for discharging from the outer chambers solid particles removed from the fluid, and another exit orifice for discharging the filtered fluid from the inner chambers. The aircraft fuel pump shown comprises a helico-centrifugal impeller 18 discharging into an annular outer chamber 26 which may be of volute form. Auxiliary impeller blades 33 surrounded by a louvred or perforated screen 35 urge the fuel in a radially inward direction through a stationary cylindrical filter screen 24 towards an inner chamber 25. Centrifugally separated solid particles, together with a small amount of liquid, are discharged through an outlet 15; further separation may be effected in a cyclone separator, centrifuge or settling tank, the separated liquid being recirculated back to the inlet 14 by means of a recirculating pump. Clean liquid is discharged from the inner chamber 25 via an outlet 20.
