1340398 Vinyl acetate/N-methylolacrylamide latexes BORDEN Inc 26 Oct 1971 49599/71 Heading C3P A stable aqueous latex of a vinyl acetate/N- methylolacrylamide copolymer is prepared by adding gradually, to an aqueous medium containing polyvinyl alcohol, a mixture of vinyl acetate and N-methylolacrylamide in a constant ratio and at a rate not exceeding the rate of polymerization, a free radical initiator also being added to the polymerization medium. An anionic surfactant may be included in the aqueous medium and also a seed latex of vinyl acetate polymer or copolymer. The latter may be prepared in situ by polymerizing a portion of the vinyl acetate in the aqueous medium before commencing the gradual addition of the two monomers. In examples the polyvinyl alcohol is at least 91% hydrolysed and the seed latex is prepared from vinyl acetate or vinyl acetate and methyl acrylate. Ammonium persulphate was used as initiator and sodium lauryl sulphate or tetrasodium N - (1,2 - dicarboxyethyl) - N- octadecyl - sulphosuccinamate as surfactants. The resulting latex is used as an adhesive for forming plywood either on its own or using additives such as p-toluenesulphonic acid and phenolformaldehyde resin.
