1387675 Dihydrobenzofuran derivatives; isopropyl phenyl derivatives ICI AUSTRALIA Ltd 24 Oct 1972 [8 Nov 1971] 48925/72 Heading C2C 2,3 - Dihydro - 2,2 - dimethyl - 7 - benzofuranyl- N-methyl carbomate is produced from the novel compound 2,3-dihydro-2,2-dimethyl-7-isopropyl benzofuran by reacting it with oxygen or a molecular oxygen-containing gas at elevated temperature and under non-acidic conditions to form the novel compound 2-(2,3-dihydro-2,2-dimethyl - 7 - benzofuranyl) - isopropylhydroperoxide, catalytically decomposing this to 2,3- dihydro - 2,2 - dimethyl - 7 - hydroxybenzofuran and reacting this with methyl isocyanate in the presence of an inert solvent and a catalyst. The novel compound 2,3-dihydro-2,2-dimethyl-7-isopropyl benzofuran is produced by [a] reacting o-isopropyl phenol with isobutyraldehyde, or [b] reacting o-isopropyl phenol with a methallyl halide to give o-isopropylphenyl methallyl ether and rearranging and ring-closing this or rearranging the o-isopropylphenyl methallyl ether to 2-isopropyl-6-methallyl phenol and ring- closing this.
