1,241,354. Substituted glutaric acid. DYNAMIT NOBEL A.G. 3 Sept., 1969 [4 Sept., 1968], No. 43695/69. Heading C2C. Substituted glutaric acids of formula in which R 1 and R 2 which may be the same or different are each an alkyl group or joined together to form a carbocyclic ring are prepared by reacting a cyanaldehyde of formula with (a) chlorine and/or bromine, and (b) water either simultaneously or in any order. The oxidation and hydrolysis processes take place at between 5 to 120 C. and may be continuous. The preparation of 2,2-dimethyl, 2-ethyl- 2-butyl, 2-ethyl-2-isopropyl, 2,2-pentamethylene glutaric acids is described.
