1466361 Riveting AVDEL Ltd 9 May 1974 [12 Feb 1973] 6857/73 Heading B3U A lockbolt placing apparatus comprises an hydraulic master piston 11 reciprocable in a master cylinder 12, an hydraulic slave piston 14 which is connectable to means for gripping the stem of a lockbolt and which is reciprocable in a slave cylinder 15 connectable to an anvil for swaging a collar into one or more grooves in the lockbolt stem, first and second hydraulic connections 25, 27 between the two cylinders 12, 15, an hydraulic reservoir 28 having a pressurized inlet valve 29 and connected to the connection 27 and pressurized relief means 35, 36 connecting the first and second hydraulic connections 25, 27 for relieving an abnormally high pressure. The master piston 11 is raised within its cylinder 12 to place a lockbolt by a double acting piston 19. A deficiency of fluid is produced in the connection 27 due to the different effective areas of the pistons 11, 14, which deficiency is made up from the reservoir 28 through an outlet valve 31. When the piston 11 is moved downwards to pull the anvil off the swaged collar, the pressure in the circuit is increased until it is sufficient to open an inlet valve 29 of the reservoir 28. Any excess fluid in the reservoir 28 is discharged through a pressure relief valve 41. The master piston 11 is provided with relief valves 35, 36, one of which is opened if an abnormally high pressure differential occurs on either side of the piston 11.
