Abstract:
1,230,495. Automatic clutch control. CATERPILLAR TRACTOR CO. 9 April, 1969 [22 April, 1968], No. 18204/69. Heading B7H. [Also in Division F2] A four-wheel-drive vehicle is provided with a clutch 28 to connect or disconnect drive to two wheels 14 and clutch control means automatically operable in dependence on the load and position of a vehicle implement 10. In the bucket loader shown four wheel drive is engaged when the bucket 10 is both tilted back and lowered or heavily loaded. To this end a microswitch 42, operated by a cam 44 on the linkage 11, and a switch 56, sensitive to pressure in the lift circuit, arranged in parallel are provided in series with a switch 46, actuated by means 48 on the bucket tilting ram 50, in a control circuit for a solenoid operated valve 34 controlling the supply of fluid to and from a cylinder 38. A piston (40) (Figs. 3, 4, not shown) in the cylinder 38 controls engagement of the dog-clutch (70) which is splined to a drive shaft (24a) for the wheels 14, with dogs (72) of a universal joint of the shaft 24 (Fig. 1) through a fork 66 on a shaft 60 and a lever 62.
