Abstract:
1439677 Photographic silver halide material KONISHIROKU PHOTO INDUSTRY CO Ltd 1 June 1973 [3 June 1972] 26362/73 Heading G2C [Also in Division B2] A photographic light-sensitive silver halide material comprises a support bearing on at least one side a coating containing (a) a water-soluble polymer and (b) a swelling or solubilizing agent for the support, one side of the support bearing on said coating and in contact therewith an antihalation layer comprising a dispersion of a dye or pigment in a water- or alkali-soluble high molecular substance, and the other side of the support carrying a photographic silver halide emulsion layer, the water-soluble polymer (a) having one of the general Formulae:- where A is derived from an ethylenically unsaturated monomer; B is H or -COOM or -COR, B being H when z is O or when R 1 is alkyl; M is H or a cation selected from NH 4 , Na, K and Li, the O-M bond being ionic where M is a said cation, and more than 10% of M atoms in said polymer are said cations; R is -OR' or -N(R") R', R' being substituted or unsubstituted alkyl, aralkyl or aryl, or a heterocyclic group, and R" being H or alkyl, or R' and R" together forming with the N atom a heterocyclic ring; R 1 and R 2 are each H or alkyl; X is -CO-O- or -O-CO-; R 3 is haloalkyl or haloalkoxy-alkyl; m, p, q, r, x, y and z indicate the mole per cent of the individual monomers from which the units of the polymer are derived and m is 40-60, p is 0-60, q is 0-50, r is 0-5, x is 0-70,y is 20-80, z is 0-80, m + p + q + r is 100 and x + y + z is 100. Many polymers of these formulae are described wherein A is derived from styrene, vinyl acetate, vinyl methyl, ethyl or chloroethyl ether, vinyl alcohol, vinyl pyrrolidone, methyl acrylate, ethyl and propyl methacrylate, acrylonitrile and acrylamide. Solubilizing or swelling agents include resorcinol, #-resorcylic acid, orcinol, pyrogallol, catechol, hydroquinone, α-naphthol, phenol, cresol, α-chlorophenol, salicyclic acid, nitrobenzoic acid, acetone, methylene chloride, chloral hydrate, toluene, acetophenone, anisole, ethylene chlorohydrin, ethylene carbonate, butylene chloride, dimethyl formamide and dimethylsulphoxide. The anti-halation agent may be a dyestuff or carbon black. The anti-halation layer has good adhesion to the support but is easily removed during photographic processing.
