Novel cephalosporanic acid derivatives of the general formula wherein R 1 is an imidazolium or imidazolyl group which may be hydrogenated and/or substituted and which is bonded to the acetylamino group by a nitrogen atom, and wherein R 2 is a free hydroxyl group or a hydroxyl group esterified by a carboxylic acid, in which ester oxygen atoms may be replaced by sulphur atoms, an optionally N-substituted carbamoyloxy group in which oxygen atoms may be replaced by sulphur atoms, or a quaternary ammonium group or a salt thereof are prepared by reacting a compound having the general formula wherein Z is a halogenacetyl radical and R 2 is as above defined, with an optionally hydrogenated and/or substituted imidazole or when Z is H the compound of Formula II is acylated by the group R 1 CH 2 CO- in which R 1 represents an imidazolyl group which may be hydrogenated and/or substituted, and, if desired, the resulting compound may be converted to a compound having a different group R 2 by known methods. The acylation may be carried out via a silylizing or stannylizing step. The starting material 3-(desacetoxymethyl)-3- benzoylthiomethyl - 7 - bromoacetylaminocephalosporanic acid is prepared by adding a solution of 3-(desacetoxymethyl)-3-benzoylthiomethyl 7 - amino - cephalosporanic acid and triethylamine in dimethylformamide to a solution of bromacetyl bromide in methylenechloride. A pharmaceutical composition comprises as active ingredient a novel compound of general Formula I above and a pharmaceutical excipient. The novel compounds are also stated to be of use in animal fodders and in additives to animal fodders.
