Document Type and Number:
Japanese Patent JPS4927082
Kind Code:
B1
Abstract:
Grease compositions comprise (a) a grease in which the thickener is a metal soap and (b) a corrosion inhibitor comprising 10-50 weight per cent, based on the inhibitor, of an alkali metal nitrite having a particle size below 5 microns suspended in a lubricating oil with an essentially hydrophobic clay. The inhibitor (b) may be prepared by mixing a clay/oil dispersion with an aqueous nitrite solution, optionally containing a dispersant, and dehydrating the resulting mixture. The oil of component (b) may be mineral or synthetic, e.g. aliphatic phosphates, esters, diesters, silicates, siloxanes and oxyalkyl ethers and esters, but is usually mineral oil. The dispersant may be pentaerythritol, glycerine, ethylene glycol or methyl cellulose. A typical grease (a) to which (b) is added to give the final grease comprises a solvent refined mineral oil thickened by lithium soaps of mixed wool grease fatty acids an hydrogenated tallow fatty acids, and also containing anti-oxidants and a viscosity-index improver.ALSO:Dispersions of alkali metal nitrites of particle size below 5 microns in mineral or synthetic lubricating oils are prepared by forming a dispersion in the oil of an oleophilic clay, mixing it with an aqueous solution of the nitrite, optionally containing a dispersant, and dehydrating the resulting mixture. The dispersant may be pentaerythritol, glycerine, ethylene glycol or methyl cellulose.
