Kind Code:
A
Abstract:
1392277 Overbased sulphurized alkylphenols; lubricants CONTINENTAL OIL CO 16 May 1973 [31 July 1972] 23275/73 Headings C4X and C5F In a process of making overbased barium salts of sulphurized alkyl phenols are by (1) mixing an alkylphenol of formula where R is C 4 -C 30 aliphatic hydrocarbyl, n = 1 or 2, the total number of alkyl carbon atoms being 8-40, with water and 15-250 parts by wt. of a process solvent boiling below 190‹ C.; (2) neutralizing and overbasing the mixture by adding a C 1 -C 6 alkanolic solution of a Ba- C 1 -C 6 aliphatic alcoholate to provide a metal ratio of 0À05-1À5; (3) contacting with CO 2 and removing volatiles by distillation, (1) the number of moles of CO 2 per mole of overbasing Ba is 0À75-3À0, (2) the number of moles of H 2 O per mole of overbasing Ba is 0À75-4À0, and (3) at least 0À5 moles of S per mole of alkylphenol is added at some stage prior to removal of volatiles. The initial admixture may contain an oilsoluble sulphonic acid, and the product may contain a non-volatile diluent oil, such as mineral oil, a fatty oil or a synthetic oil, e.g. esters, hydrocarbons, polyoxyalkylenes or phosphorus acid esters.
