1397695 Blood oxygenating apparatus SHERWOOD MEDICAL INDUSTRIES INC 9 May 1973 [15 June 1972] 22196/73 Heading A5R [Also in Division B1] Blood oxygenating apparatus comprises an oxygenation chamber 18 having an inlet 83 and/or 85 for blood and an inlet 72 for oxygenating gas, the location at which the gas enters the chamber being selectively variable so that the time for which the blood is in contact with the gas can be varied dependent on the need of the patient. The inlets 83, 85 and 72 are secured in a member 48 which is slidable within a plastics tube 44 defining chamber 18 and is in liquid-tight engagement with the walls thereof, the member being held in selected position within tube 44 by a clamp 50. The member 48 includes a gas diffuser plate 58 formed with apertures 70. The tube 44 is sealed to the inlet 24 of a defoaming compartment 20 which together with a bloodsettling compartment 22 is formed by heat sealing together two plastics sheets 12, 14 along line 16. Compartment 20 contains a defoaming member 28, e.g. plastics or metal fibres coated with an anti-foam agent, enclosed by a filter 30 e.g. of nylon. A vent 34 is provided for venting excess oxygen and also carbon dioxide from the blood. The compartment 22 has a blood outlet tube 38 sealed therein. The compartments 20, 22 may include a bubble trap. A rod may be provided to assist adjustment of member 48.
