Document Type and Number:
Japanese Patent JPS4981418
Kind Code:
A
Abstract:
1400981 Electro-phoretic deposition of ceramics FERRO CORP 4 Sept 1973 [16 Nov 1972] 41585/73 Heading C7B An ironcontaining workpiece is contacted with an aqueous solution of a salt of a metal below Fe in the electro-motive series e.g. Cd, Co, Ni, Zr, Sn, Pb, Cu or Hg to deposit chemically a coating of the metal on the workpiece, and a ceramic coating is thereafter electro-phoretically deposited on the metal coating there being no silica sol present in the coating bath. The metal salt solution may be acidic e.g. CuSo4in H 2 SO 4 and the electro-phoretic coating may be effected from an aqueous frit dispersion at a pH above 11.0 after rinsing the metal coating with an alkaline bath, e.g. Na 2 CO 3 . Subsequent to electro-phoretic coating the workpiece may be contacted with an aqueous strong inorganic acid or salt thereof, e.g. monoammonium phosphate, and is then fired. The electro-phoretic bath may comprise an aqueous suspension of glass frit and may include clay, bentonite, gum tragacanth, NaOH or KOH and NaCl or Na aluminate. The c.d. may be 5-100 amp/ft2 at 2-300 V D.C. for 10-40 seconds.
