1385858 Polyurethanes, polythiourethanes and polyureas ATLANTIC RICHFIELD CO 17 July 1973 [31 July 1972] 33991/73 Heading C3R Organic compounds, particularly polymeric compounds, containing urea, urethane or thiourethane groups are prepared by reacting (A) a nucleophilic organic compound having at least one reactive hydrogen-containing radical which is a primary or secondary amino radical, a hydroxyl radical or a mercapto radical, with (B) a cyclic nitrile carbonate of the formula wherein R is an organic radical and n has a value of at least one, in the presence of (C) a catalytically-effective amount of an organic or inorganic fluoride. The compound (A) is most preferably a polyol, polyesters and polyethers being used in the examples. The compound (B) may be monomeric or polymeric, adipodinitrile carbonate being used in the examples. Catalyst (C) may be an alkali metal fluoride, particularly potassium fluoride or a quaternary ammonium or quaternary phosphonium fluoride. The polymers may be foamed by utilizing the CO 2 liberated on decomposition of the cyclic nitrile carbonate.
