Abstract:
1,235,535. A-nor-steroids. ROUSSELUCLAF. 23 May, 1968 [29 May, 1967; 23 Aug., 1967], No. 52357/70. Divided out of 1,235,532. Heading C2C. Novel A-nor-steroids of the formula and their 2-ketals (wherein OR is a free, esterified or etherified hydroxy group) are prepared by decarboxylation of A-nor-steroids of the formula and, when required, ketalization of the products. The decarboxylation may be accomplished merely by heating, preferably in an organic solvent of high boiling point, e.g. quinoline, and advantageously in the presence of an accelerator, e.g. copper chromite. The starting material may comprise a 17#-hydroxy/acyloxy mixture, in which case the decarboxylated product is esterified to give a single 17#-acylate. A 2-oxo- 17#-hydroxy product may be etherified or esterified. A 2-ketalized- 17#-hydroxy product may be etherified, e.g. by reaction with an alkenyl halide to give a 17#-alkenyloxy compound, the 2-oxo group of which may then be liberated.
